The Australian Rules Football AFL TV rights are big business, everybody knows that right?
Telstra's long suffering shareholders will find some cheer with today's announcement Telstra has secured is set to secure the AFL's internet streaming rights for a song and finally kick a winning goal!
While the TV rights look certain to be split between the Foxtel and Channel 7 for around $900 million the internet rights look like being picked up be Telstra for a $100 million.
The reason this could turn out to be the steal of the century is all TV's will shortly be able to stream internet content on demand.
In the last week webtron had delivered a new Samsung LED TV. The TV is already configured for Telstra Big Pond internet TV streaming. And once setup we had immediate access to a on demand AFL channel, NRL rugby and more. It was both simple, quick and featured some interesting useful interactive features. Meaning you can watch this weeks game and even all of last years finals series on demand. All through your home Big Pond broadband connection.
Forget cable TV like Foxtel the internet is the future for sport including the AFL and NRL and it's here now. One very impressed webtron staff member who watched this experiment stated he would immediately cancel his Foxtel subscription as all he used it for was watching his beloved game of NRL rugby league.
Webtron prediction by the end of 2012 almost all new TV's will be able to stream internet content. This will have huge consequences for the pay TV operators, free to air providers and your local DVD hire store. And partner this with drastic broadband bandwidth increases the National Broadband Network will bring reaching more homes than ever it becomes obvious the Telstra has kicked a winning goal in securing the AFL rights for $100 million for 5 years.
This is sure to finally bring some cheer for long suffering Telstra shareholders who have watched for too long Telstra being kicked into touch by mismanagement and public brawls with the governement.
