What Interior Design Can Teach You about Your Website Design

What can interior design teach you about corporate website design?

Do some of the rules of interior design also apply to corporate website design?

When you think about it, interior design and website design are very similar. Both involve organising and presenting something in a way which makes it aesthetically pleasing as well as easy to use, whether it is a living room or a company website.

When looking at your corporate website design, take some inspiration from interior design to create a website, which is beautiful and welcoming.

Clutter Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

Have you ever walked into a room which had way too much furniture and stuff in it for its size? You probably struggled to move around and found yourself bumping into things, all the while feeling claustrophobic and wishing you could leave.

The same happens when your customers arrive at your cluttered website. They are overwhelmed by all of the links, images, toolbars and text. It’s likely they don’t even know where to start. Take inspiration from elegant and minimalist interior designers and make a website that feels more spacious.

Website Design Layout is Important

When an interior designer places furniture in a room, they don’t simply think about how it looks but they also consider how the inhabitants of the home will be using that room. Chairs, couches, beds and tables are placed in the best way possible to facilitate movement through the room and the activities which will be performed in that room.

Websites need to be built with this consideration as well. Think about how the navigation of your website. And think about how people will be using it. Making them click through five pages to get to the information they need is like making someone crawl under a table and over a chair to get into bed.

Texture and Colour Provide Mood

Interior designers know that colour and texture are incredibly important for establishing the mood of a room. A bedroom with soft shades of blue and grey will be very calming and peaceful. Likewise, a kitchen with bright reds and yellows will have a cheerful feeling. Smooth and shiny textures look sleek and sophisticated. Whereas soft and fuzzy textures create a comfy vibe. Again, rough textures such as stone and wood create a natural, outdoorsy feeling. Designers use colours and textures very artfully, adding a splash here and there in the form of an accent wall or a throw pillow, to create exactly the mood they want.

Think carefully about the colours that you use on your company’s website. What kind of an impression are they making on your viewers? For example, you wouldn’t use the same paint in a baby’s nursery as in your home office, so don’t use pale pastel pink on the website for a professional law firm.

These are just a few lessons that interior design can teach you about building an attractive company’s website design.
