How to Fix a Cluttered Website
It’s one of the biggest web design mistakes to have a cluttered website. And if your website is committing this faux pas, it is time for a total redesign.
Many companies have websites that are just too cluttered with links, text, images, blogs, videos and much more. Perhaps they are trying to make their website more interesting and provide content for the reader, but it ends up looking cluttered and overwhelming. In a sea of information, your viewers get confused and frustrated and they click away.
When it comes to web design, less is more. Your website will be much more successful when it is streamlined, well organised and contains only the most important information. But how do you know if it’s time to fix a cluttered website? If your website has gotten cluttered out of control, then here are some tips for redesigning it:
Distance Yourself From Your Website
Sometimes when we look at something every day, we get so used to it that we fail to notice its flaws. Try to avoid looking at your company’s website for at least a week. This will create a bit of distance which will help you see it objectively.
See It for the First Time
After a week, navigate to the website and imagine that you are a customer looking at it for the first time. What stands out? What is your eye drawn to first? Your design should instantly lead your viewers into an interaction with the website and your business, but if the design is cluttered and unfocused this will not happen.
Try Out the Navigation
But the best way is to imagine that you are trying to find information about a particular product or service. Then how long does it take to find what you are looking for? How many different pages do you need to click through to get where you want to go? Does each subpage have its own primary purpose, or are they all jumbled together? Is the navigation laid out neatly on the side? Or is it encompassed in an obscure “creative” graphic.
What is absolutely necessary?
Also take a look at your website and especially the landing page. What are the essential piece of information on this page and which ones can you remove or include in subpages? The front page of your site might only need to include an attractive graphic, the name of your company, a short tagline describing what you do and the links to navigate to other pages for more information. Try eliminating everything else to see how much better the website looks with just the basics.
These are a few tips for making over your cluttered company website.
